Brookline's Puppet Theater Has a Grown-Ups Night This November. It's Not the Only Surprise.

October 22, 2026

On Saturday, November 14, the stage at 32 Station Street hosts two very different audiences. At 10:30 a.m., Puppet Showplace Theater runs a showing of Dig Down Deep: A Cave Adventure by CactusHead Puppets, three days after its November 11 world premiere. It's a tabletop and shadow show about bats, fish and salamanders, recommended for ages 5 to 9. At 8 p.m., the same room hosts the Fall Puppet Slam, which the theater describes as "an evening of short-form puppetry for adults," recommended for adults and teens 16 and up.

That one Saturday shows how adult evenings in Brookline work this fall. The Brookline places with the most interesting evening plans for November are mostly ones residents connect with kids' mornings, weekday classes or a quick shopping stop. Each runs a separate schedule after dark, and you won't find it unless you scroll past the daytime listings.

One stage, two calendars

Puppet Showplace's November calendar is mostly mornings. Here's how the month breaks down by audience, using the theater's own listings.

Date Show Time Recommended for
Sun, Nov 1 Lisa the Wise: A Baba Yaga Story by Sarah Nolen of Puppet Motion 10:30 am, 1:00 pm Ages 4 to 10
Tue, Nov 3 The Loose Caboose by Harry LaCoste 10:30 am, 1:00 pm Ages 3 to 7
Fri, Nov 6 An Evening with Mr. Vernon Watercress by Nate Puppets 8:00 pm Ages 16+
Sat, Nov 7 The Breakfast Show by Nate Puppets 10:30 am Ages 5 to 9
Sat, Nov 7 Puppet sculpting workshop with Nate Puppets, on Zoom 2:00 to 5:00 pm Adults 18+
Wed, Nov 11 Dig Down Deep world premiere 2:00 pm, 4:00 pm Ages 5 to 9
Sat, Nov 14 Dig Down Deep 10:30 am Ages 5 to 9
Sat, Nov 14 Fall Puppet Slam 8:00 pm Adults and teens 16+
Sun, Nov 15 Dig Down Deep 10:30 am Ages 5 to 9
Sat–Sun, Nov 21–22 NEST by Happy Theater 9:30 am, 11:30 am Ages 1 to 6
Fri–Sun, Nov 27–29 Cinderella by Tanglewood Marionettes Mornings and afternoons Ages 4 to 8

Two of those evenings start at 8 p.m. and are aimed at grown-ups. The rest of the month is built around naps and school holidays. The theater even marks its Election Day show on November 3, its Veterans Day matinees on November 11 and its Black Friday Cinderella on November 27 as holiday dates.

The Nate Puppets weekend shows this most clearly. On Friday, November 6, at 8 p.m., Nate Puppets performs An Evening with Mr. Vernon Watercress. The listing asks, "What if a fuzzy hand puppet could make you face your own humanity and reconcile with a tragic and horrific past?" and promises "a splash of Broadway and jazz standards." The next morning at 10:30, the same company is back with The Breakfast Show, a hand-puppet piece for ages 5 to 9 about making art and "not letting people tell you 'no.'" That afternoon, Nate Puppets teaches an 18+ sculpting workshop on Zoom. Bring a glue gun. The listing covers foam sculpture, fabric patching and something it calls "the secret crust."

So one performer covers a 16+ evening show, a kids' morning show and an adults-only class in less than a day. The theater on Station Street has a side that only shows up after 8 p.m., and it's easy to miss.

Before November, Halloween weekend stays family-focused. Lisa the Wise: A Baba Yaga Story, a shadow-puppet show, runs Saturday, October 31, and Sunday, November 1, at 10:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. The weekend before, The Four Seasons by Drama of Works plays October 24 and 25 at the same two times.

The art center switches over at 6:30

The same split shows up at Brookline Arts Center, 86 Monmouth Street. The center's newest fall adult classes run in the daytime. Pottery & Handbuilding meets Wednesdays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. starting October 21. Oil Painting I meets Thursdays from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. starting October 29. A short Wheelthrowing session runs Fridays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. starting October 30.

After work, the schedule changes. Every weeknight from Monday to Thursday has at least one studio class starting at 6:30 p.m.:

  • Monday: Jewelry & Metalsmithing, running Sept. 28 to Dec. 2, and Handbuilding & Wheelthrowing, running Sept. 14 to Nov. 30
  • Tuesday: Jewelry & Metalsmithing, Pottery & Wheelthrowing, and Thinking in Ink, all starting Sept. 15 and running into late November or Dec. 1
  • Wednesday: Jewelry & Metalsmithing and Watercolor I, Sept. 16 to Nov. 25
  • Thursday: Pottery & Wheelthrowing, Sept. 17 to Dec. 3, and Watercolor II, Sept. 24 to Dec. 3

Those are 10-session classes that started in September, so by late October they're well past halfway. The evening options that start in November are on the weekend. A short-session Pottery & Wheelthrowing class runs Sundays from November 1 to November 29, and another runs Saturdays from November 7 to December 12. Both start at 5:30 p.m. That puts a Saturday at the pottery wheel at the same time of day the puppet theater is getting ready for its 8 p.m. adult show.

The center's current exhibition gives you something to do before or after class. Which Way?, the artist-in-residence exhibition by Katie McColgan, runs through November 20, 2026. Its opening reception was back on September 18.

Separately, ArtsBrookline's events calendar lists one-session craft workshops this season: Coloring Cyanotypes on October 24, How to Make Beaded Earrings on November 7, a Studio 1 Screen-Free Salon on gathering and weaving on November 13, and a beaded-bracelet workshop on November 14.

A wine shop rebuilt its floor for gatherings

The third example is a shop in Brookline Village. Sorriso Market, the wine and gourmet food shop at 27 Harvard Street, reopened in early September under its original owner, Nick Lisotto, Brookline.News reported on September 1. Lisotto had sold the Brookline Village store in 2023 and has now taken it back.

The detail that matters for an evening out is how he rebuilt the space. Brookline.News reported that the store reopened in the same space with the floor rearranged for community gatherings. The plans include wine tastings ranging from casual Tuesday nights to openings of one-of-a-kind bottles, balsamic tastings and, later, pasta-making workshops. "Now it's truly going to be an experience," Lisotto told Brookline.News, adding that he plans to "amp up the art gallery piece as well." For serious collectors, the outlet reported a planned private membership with access to the deep cellar.

The September plan was Wednesday-through-Sunday hours during a soft opening, then a full relaunch of events in October. These are plans the owner announced, so check current hours and tasting dates with the shop on sorrisomarket.com before you go.

Why the pattern holds

All three places run the same way. Each already has a room, staff and a daytime audience. The evening program reuses that room once the daytime crowd goes home. Puppet Showplace runs its 16+ shows at 8 p.m. on the same stage it uses for morning family shows. Brookline Arts Center starts adult studio time at 6:30 p.m. in the building that hosts its daytime classes. Sorriso rearranged its retail floor to fit tastings.
